Fourteen people described as mercenaries pleaded innocent in New Orleans to charges stemming from a plot to overthrow the government of Suriname. Authorities said members of the group planned to pose as financiers closing a bank deal, then seize power after taking hostage Commander in Chief Desi Bouterse, head of state of the small South American country. The defendants were indicted on charges of illegal foreign intervention and violating currency export laws.
