Long Beach : Year-Round Schools Voted
The Long Beach Board of Education has voted to publish its intent to operate year-round schools in 1987-88.
With that legally required action, the board took its first formal step toward establishing a 12-month program at up to four elementary schools yet to be chosen, administrators said. The board also set up a committee to examine several other options that would expand classroom capacity.
Administrators say 18 elementary schools would have to be converted to year-round programs, if that were the only solution used, just to absorb the additional students expected next fall. That is why officials are looking at a number of other solutions, including the lease of portable classrooms and unused campuses in other districts.
