Fullerton College football Coach Hal Sherbeck will have to wait another week to have a chance at career victory 200.
Rancho Santiago College defeated the Hornets, 26-23, Saturday night in front of 3,200 spectators in Fullerton District Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
Sherbeck came into the game with a career record of 199-53-6.
Don kicker Darryl Willis kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:20 left for the winning score.
Freshman running back Glenn Campbell had the key play on the winning drive. On third and two from the Fullerton 44, Campbell broke a 16-yard run to the 28. He finished with 108 yards in 8 carries.
It was also Campbell who keyed the Dons’ third-quarter drive to tie the score at 23-23.
The Hornets drove 64 yards to open the second half and scored on a one-yard dive by quarterback Richard Williams.
Campbell brought the Dons back with a 57-yard run. He was forced out of bounds on the Hornet 13.
The Dons continued the drive and got the ball to the seven but were faced with a fourth and two. After calling a timeout, quarterback John Cook kept the ball and ran around right end for the score. Willis’ extra point tied the score at 23-23.
The first half did little to separate the teams and ended 16-16.
Rancho Santiago put together a 14-play, 71-yard drive starting with 5:49 left to take the lead, 16-9. Campbell scored on a two-yard dive over the top.
The drive had appeared in danger when the Dons were faced with second and 33 after a sack and an off-side call. But Cook was able to find tight end Mark Votendahl for 25 yards. The pair connected again for an eight-yard pass play to the two for a first down.
From there, Campbell scored on the next play with 1:25 left in the half.
The Hornets came right back and scored on a five-play drive to tie the score.
After an eight-yard run by Andrew Greer, Williams connected with wide receiver Erl Jones twice on gains of 24 and 19 yards to give the Hornets a first down on the Rancho Santiago 20 with 20 seconds left.
Williams then threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Roger Little, who moved inside of the cornerback to make the catch in the end zone.
Fullerton took a 3-0 first quarter lead on a 37-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Todd Reynolds.
Reynolds added field goals of 40 and 27 yards in the second quarter.
The Dons’ other touchdown came after Williams fumbled a snap from center and Rancho Santiago recovered the ball on the Hornet 12.
Cook ducked under pressure and completed a 10-yard scoring pass to K. B. Nelson, who was alone in the back of the end zone.
