FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Simi Valley Upsets Royal in Volleyball

The Royal High girls volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the latest Southern Section 2-A poll, was upset by unranked Simi Valley in a Marmonte League match Thursday, 15-7, 15-11, 15-9. The cross-town rivals shared league titles in 1979 and 1980, but the Pioneers had been winless against Royal since.
Outside hitter Lura Braden had eight kills and Chris Jones had a solid passing performance for Royal. Both teams are 3-1 in league.
L.A. Baptist def. Western Christian, 15-11, 15-9, 15-7--Shawn Davison, a sophomore setter, served 15 points, including four aces, to lead L.A. Baptist to its 56th consecutive Alpha League win at Western Christian. L.A. Baptist, 4-0 in league, 5-1 overall, has not lost a league match since it joined the Alpha League five years ago.
Laurie Evans, a senior outside hitter, had five kills and three blocks for L.A. Baptist. Teammate Kendra Frazier, a senior middle blocker, had five kills and four blocks.
Village Christian def. L.A. Lutheran, 14-16, 15-4, 15-6, 15-11--Karin Yoho and Heather Hepburn, both first team all-league selections last season, combined for 22 kills in the Alpha League match at Village Christian. Pam Hale added six kills for the Crusaders (6-1).
Montclair Prep def. Maranatha, 9-15, 15-12, 15-8, 16-14--Cheryl Conly, a senior outside hitter, had 28 kills and a .560 hitting percentage in Montclair Prep’s Alpha League win. Cindy Stein, the setter, had all 36 of Montclair Prep’s assists.
Hart def. La Canada, 12-15, 8-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-6--Hart’s Tomomi Ikeda, an exchange student from Japan, had six saves in the third game. Tiffany Leigh had 14 kills and Kristen Paris had five digs and seven blocks for Indians.
Notre Dame def. Faith Baptist, 15-6, 15-7, 15-13--Tammy Silva and Dana Marasca served for 10 points each in Notre Dame’s nonleague win at home. Kathleen Herron added four kills for Notre Dame (5-1).
Simi Lutheran def. California Christian, 15-11, 15-4, 15-9--Tanya Deukmejian had three kills for Simi Lutheran in the nonleague match at the Shriallo Auditorium in Simi Valley.
Kennedy def. Norbonne, 4-15, 15-6, 15-7--Kennedy’s Elke Hohls had six kills in the nonleague match.
WATER POLO
Notre Dame 21, Burroughs (B) 10--Josh Foster and Scott Weber each scored seven goals to lead Notre Dame at Burroughs. Notre Dame was ahead 15-0 before Burroughs scored in the third quarter.
Crespi 9, Temple City 7--Chappie DeHaven and Andy Carbonell scored three goals apiece as Crespi won in the first round of the Los Altos tournament. Crespi (2-1) led at halftime, 6-1, and then held off Temple City in the second half.
CROSS COUNTRY
Hart 15, Alhambra 50--The Foothill League meet was forfeited. Cindy Medearis ran the course in 22:30.
Louisville 21, Chaminade 36--Louisville placed four runners among the top five finishers to win its opening San Fernado Valley League meet at Chatsworth Park. Theresa Rice, who was second, turned in Louisville’s fastest time, finishing in 21:30.
