Johnson & Johnson renewed an agreement to underwrite $70 million in biomedical research at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation over the next 10 years--in exchange for commercial development rights to anything discovered. Scripps President Charles C. Edwards said most work funded by Johnson & Johnson is basic research that can be applied to the development of both therapeutic and diagnostic drugs. Johnson & Johnson operates a research center in Sorrento Valley, where findings made at La Jolla-based Scripps are refined for commercial use.
