Young Woman Steps Into Traffic, Dies

CARLSBAD — An unidentified woman was killed Sunday afternoon when she stepped into the southbound lane of Interstate 5 and was hit by a vehicle.
The woman was struck at 12:01 p.m. and died in the emergency room at Tri-City Hospital in Oceanside at 12:26, a coroner’s deputy said.
The accident occurred south of the Elm Avenue exit when the woman, who had been walking on the freeway’s center divider, stepped off into the southbound lane of the freeway. No arrests were made in connection with the accident, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
The woman was described as Hispanic, about 18 years old, 5 feet 2 inches tall and 114 pounds. She was wearing a black T-shirt with the words “Black California 86” on it, the coroner’s deputy said.
