SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Father Edward A. Malloy, a theologian and associate provost at the University of Notre Dame, was named the university’s 16th president today and will succeed Father Theodore Hesburgh.
Malloy, 45, a native of Washington, D.C., and an ordained Holy Cross priest who once played basketball for Notre Dame, was chosen from among five candidates during an afternoon meeting of the school’s Board of Trustees. Malloy will take office when Hesburgh, 69, retires next spring.
