Senior forward Mike Sotelo scored with five minutes gone in overtime Sunday to give Fresno State a 1-0 win over defending champion UCLA in the NCAA Far West regional soccer final at Fresno State.
The loss, before 5,339 fans in Bulldog Stadium, ended UCLA’s 39-game unbeaten streak. The last Bruin defeat was also to Fresno State, 2-1, in September, 1985.
UCLA (16-1-5) could manage only one shot on goal, by Shaun Del Grande, in overtime. Fresno State (17-4-1) will meet SMU in the NCAA quarterfinals next weekend at a site to be determined.
“We gave the ball away a lot today,” UCLA Coach Zigi Schmid said. “I thought we were never really direct enough. Not to take anything away from Fresno State. They are an effective team, but I don’t think our team played well either time up here.”
