Italy Students Demand Minister Quit

ROME — Thousands of Italian students took to the streets all over Italy on Friday to demand the resignation of Education Minister Franca Falcucci and to protest the government’s education policies.
In Rome, about 3,000 students staged a sit-in outside the Education Ministry. Student groups said that about 25,000 protesters turned out in Florence, 27,000 in Turin and 15,000 in Naples.
On Wednesday, the Italian Parliament rejected a motion of no-confidence in Falcucci sponsored by the Communist Party and backed by other opposition parties.
Falcucci had been attacked for failing to modernize school curriculums and last month suffered a setback when the lower house rejected the first version of the 1987 education budget.
