The United Nations approved a six-month extension of its peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon at the request of Lebanon and U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar. The 15-nation Security Council unanimously approved the extension--from Jan. 19 to July 31--of the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, which was first sent to the area in 1978. Perez de Cuellar, in asking for the extension, said violence involving Israeli-backed security forces and Muslim fundamentalists is increasing in the area. Lebanese Ambassador Rachid Fakhoury said the 10-nation peace force is the “best available option for peace and security in the region.” UNIFIL has suffered 139 dead since 1978.
