A grand jury began to hear testimony in the Howard Beach racial attack case on the eve of a citywide day of black protest mourning the death of the man who was chased to his death in the attack. The office of Special State Prosecutor Charles Hynes declined to say when the two surviving victims of the attack in the Howard Beach section of Queens, N.Y., would appear before the grand jury or how many witnesses would testify.
