Salvadoran business groups reported more than 80% compliance with a one-day general strike against President Jose Napoleon Duarte’s economic policies. Most shops in downtown San Salvador were closed. Many factories, restaurants and even private schools shut their doors for the day. The strike’s main purpose was to protest Duarte’s imposition of higher taxes at the beginning of the year.
