At least 46 people were known dead and more than 100 were injured after a Brazilian commuter train passed through a red warning light near a suburban train station during a driving rain and slammed into a second passenger train, officials said. The heavy rain and a 24-foot drop next to the tracks made it difficult for rescue workers to reach the victims. The accident occurred outside the station at Itaquera, about 17 miles east of Sao Paulo. The commuter train passed through the warning light at a track crossing and struck the fourth car of the second train, witnesses said. The death toll is expected to climb, fire officials said.
