“Blowout at Crazy Horse: A Trad Jazz Video” featuring the South Frisco Jazz Band and the Fenix Jazz Band, with guests Chris Norris and Dick Shooshan. Present Past Productions. $24.95. Director Richard Roy Miller, who co-produced with Wally Holmes and Bill Knowles, has come up with a rousing, straight-ahead account of two fine traditional bands wailing through such classics as “Bill Bailey” and “Twelfth Street Rag.” Fenix, an Argentine group, was a hit at last year’s trad jazz festival with its showpiece version of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Guest artist Dick Shooshan, pianist-leader of Pasadena’s Golden Eagle Jazz Band, supports the band’s superb blues vocalist Chris Norris in three songs, including Bessie Smith’s “Young Woman’s Blues” and “After You’ve Gone.” Not a lot on the cassette shelves for trad lovers, but this imaginatively photographed, well-recorded live session (dancers and all) has to be one of the best.
