The Chinese Communist Party must fight “bourgeois liberalism” for “dozens of years” but should not neglect democracy, acting party chief Zhao Ziyang said. In a speech reported on Beijing radio, Zhao, who is also China’s premier, told a meeting of scientists that they should be free to express their views to the party. Zhao took over the party job after Hu Yaobang was dismissed from the post in January amid attacks on bourgeois liberalism, a code phrase for Western political ideas.
