San Diego Section Softball : Sacrifice Pays Off for Monte Vista, 1-0

Kim Williams hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run in the seventh inning Tuesday to give top-seeded Monte Vista (17-5) a 1-0 victory over visiting Hilltop (22-6) in the first round of the San Diego Section 3-A softball playoffs.
Danelle Silva led off the seventh for Monte Vista with a single up the middle. She took second on a passed ball, advanced to third when Melissa Rodriguez reached base on an error, and scored on the sacrifice fly. Rodriguez pitched a two-hit shutout.
Monte Vista, one of three Grossmont League teams to win Tuesday, will play No. 4-seeded Sweetwater (19-5) Thursday at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, the site of all the semifinal games.

Sweetwater 1, Madison 0--Diana Hernandez scored the game’s only run for No. 4-seeded Sweetwater over visiting Madison (19-6). Hernandez reached first on an error, stole second and scored when the catcher’s throw to second went into center field. Susie Lawrence pitched a four-hit shutout for the victory.
Grossmont 5, Patrick Henry 3 (9)--Second-seeded Patrick Henry (21-6) held a 3-1 lead after six innings, but visiting Grossmont (18-5) scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth to win. Grossmont will play Grossmont League rival El Capitan Thursday.

University 1, Christian 0--Julie Eggleton pitched a two-hit shutout to beat No. 1-seeded Christian (15-8). University (12-10) scored in the top of the second when Torrey Terrell scored on a single by Anne Casey. University will play Marian Thursday.
Marian 2, San Marcos 0 (8 innings)--Marian (14-10) scored two runs in the top of the eighth to beat No. 4-seeded San Marcos (15-8). Debbie Hale drove in the winning run with a bloop single that scored Shelly Huskey. Darbie Seedrist pitched a three-hit shutout.
Mar Vista 6, University City 2--No. 2-seeded Mar Vista (18-4) scored four runs in the fourth inning to eliminate visiting University City (16-6). Angie Wyckoff, Nicky Meyer, Elsa Durazo and Patty Valdez had consecutive singles in the inning. Mar Vista advances to play No. 3-seeded Mission Bay Thursday.

Bishop’s 2, Lutheran High School of San Diego 1 (8 innings)--Jackie Jones singled in the bottom of the eighth to score Katie Dick and give Bishop’s (20-2) the Coastal League championship. Dick doubled and reached third on a bunt by winning pitcher Darcy Fontana.
