Jacques Demers made telephone contact with the Detroit Red Wings last year while he was still coaching the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Detroit News reported.

National Hockey League President John Ziegler in January suspended Pat Quinn and levied substantial fines against the Vancouver Canucks and the Kings when it was discovered Quinn had signed with the Canucks to be their general manager while still coaching the Kings.

However, Ziegler denied the newspaper report.

“It’s another case of people running off at the mouth without having a clear understanding of the issue,” Ziegler said.

It was announced Friday that St. Louis and Detroit had settled their dispute over Demers.
