Dole’s White House Bid OKd for U.S. Funds

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) is eligible to receive matching funds from the federal Treasury for his 1988 presidential campaign, the Federal Election Commission has announced.
Dole, who has a campaign committee in place but has not formally announced his candidacy, was certified for the funding that becomes available in January.
To qualify, a candidate must raise at least $5,000 in each of 20 states in contributions of $250 or less.
Dole becomes the fifth presidential contender to qualify for matching funds. Already in line for the money are Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.), former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt, Rep. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y.) and Vice President George Bush.
The matching funds come from the $1 voluntary political checkoff on individual income tax returns. Candidates must comply with spending limits in each state to receive matching funds.
