Poland apologized to Bonn for shelling a West German warship in international waters during a Warsaw Pact naval exercise in the Baltic, the West German Foreign Ministry said. The ministry said Polish Ambassador Tadeusz Nestorowicz assured West Germany that the incident was an accident and extended regrets to the three sailors injured by the gunfire Monday. A Polish corvette attempting to shoot down a flying drone target during a gunnery exercise hit the West German tender Neckar with eight 30-millimeter anti-aircraft rounds. West Germany contends the firing violated maritime rules.
