Chris McCarron, winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness aboard Alysheba, celebrated his homecoming in Boston by riding Waquoit to a nose victory in the $200,000 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs.
McCarron, a native of Boston’s Dorchester section, had Waquoit in front all the way as the 4-year-old colt fended off a homestretch challenge by heavy favorite Broad Brush, ridden by Angel Cordero. Tour d’Or was third.
Waquoit paid $10.60 to win. He was clocked in 1:49 for 1 1/8 miles.
