Lost Code Wins St. Paul Derby; Cryptoclearance Fifth

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Front-running favorite Lost Code led from wire-to-wire Sunday in winning the $300,000 St. Paul Derby at Canterbury Downs.
It was the sixth straight victory for the brown colt, which won the $180,000 purse for owner Donald Levinson of Baltimore, trainer Bill Donovan and jockey Gene St. Leon. Lost Code’s career earnings are $830,006.
Proudest Duke, a 15-to-1 underdog, made a late charge to finish second by 1 lengths in the second-annual 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds at the three-year-old track located 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
Staff Riot, a locally stabled colt who was Canterbury’s top 2-year-old in 1986, finished third.
Cryptoclearance, the Florida Derby champion who finished second in the Belmont, third in the Preakness and fourth in the Kentucky Derby, and who went off at 7-5, never challenged and finished fifth.
Lost Code, which was timed in 1:49 2/5 on a fast track, paid $4.40, $3.40 and $3. Proudest Duke paid $8.60 and $4.80 and Staff Riot paid $4.40.
