Derrick Fenner, a North Carolina tailback who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing last season, was indicted Tuesday by a Prince George’s County (Md.) grand jury on murder and other charges connected to a killing believed to be part of a drug “turf war.”
The grand jury charged Fenner with murder, two counts of use of a handgun, attempted first-degree murder, assault with attempt to disable and malicious shooting in connection with the death of 19-year-old Marcellus Leach, who was shot May 23 in the courtyard of a Hyattsville, Md., apartment complex, police said. A second teen-ager was wounded.
A witness picked out Fenner, 20, from photographs as the man who did the shooting.
Fenner was also indicted on charges of transporting a handgun and possessing cocaine, both charges stemming from an incident April 9 when Fenner was arrested by police who found a revolver and vials of white powder in a truck he was driving.
Fenner, who has been academically ineligible since December, has been in jail since being arrested on murder charges June 3 and is being held without bond.
