Giving Credit Where It’s Due

An article by Dean Murphy (Times, June 25) describes a war memorial for Korean veterans in San Pedro. The memorial is to be designed by sculptor Felix de Weldon who “created the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Va.”
This is simply not true. The memorial in Arlington was a replica of (news photographer) Joe Rosenthal’s famous picture of the flag raising, probably the most famous picture of World War II! De Weldon may have done the sculpture . . . but he certainly did not create it.
As a matter of fact, it was necessary for Congress to pass a bill for Joe to get the credit he deserved for the Arlington statue after de Weldon did the sculpture without any mention of Joe.
Just for the record.
