ST. LOUIS — Jack Clark hit a three-run homer and Willie McGee followed with a home run, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to their sixth straight victory, a 6-3 win over the Dodgers in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader Wednesday.
Clark leads the major leagues with 82 runs batted in and tied Cincinnati’s Eric Davis for the National League home run lead with 25. The Cardinals, who began the night with an eight-game lead in the NL East, have their longest winning streak of the season.
Clark and McGee homered in the fifth inning off Fernando Valenzuela (7-7), who had beaten St. Louis six straight times since July, 1984.
Bob Forsch (8-3) scattered four hits before Mike Marshall and Mickey Hatcher homered in the seventh inning. Pedro Guerrero hit his 17th homer in the eighth against reliever Todd Worrell.
Valenzuela did not allow a hit until Tommy Herr doubled with one out in the fourth.
