The Treasury will borrow $28 billion to replenish government coffers at a series of auctions beginning today. Every three months the government holds three major debt sales to help finance the $2.3-trillion national debt. The auction package calls for the sale of $9.75 billion in three-year notes today, $9.25 billion in 10-year notes Wednesday and $9 billion in 30-year bonds Thursday. The auctions this week would have taken place two weeks ago, but were delayed because Congress had failed to pass needed legislation raising the borrowing limit.
