Chad said its forces have repulsed Libya’s second attempt in less than a week to recapture the town of Aouzou, killing 291 Libyan soldiers. A statement from the Chadian military command said Libya unsuccessfully launched four successive air and ground attacks on the small oasis town in the disputed Aouzou Strip, a 1,000-mile long, 70-mile wide zone between the two countries. It described the fighting as “particularly fierce” and said it ended with the Libyan attackers in “fantastic disarray.”
