John Corrigan kicked a 28-yard field goal with five seconds remaining as NCAA Division III UC Santa Barbara defeated Division II Cal Lutheran, 16-15, in a nonconference game Saturday at Santa Barbara.
Trailing 12-0, the Gauchos scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Paul Wright threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Sean Russell and Kenny Smith scored on a 5-yard run with 12:47 remaining to give Santa Barbara (7-2) a 13-12 lead.
Cal Lutheran (2-6) regained the lead on a 47-yard field goal by Ken Hawk with 6:45 left. But Wright drove the Gauchos 80 yards in 9 plays in the final minutes to set up Corrigan’s game-winning field goal. Wright finished with 22 completions in 49 attempts for 261 yards.
Cal Lutheran built a 12-0 halftime lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Noel Chesnut and a 25-yard touchdown pass from Tom Bonds to Joe Monarrez.
Russell caught 8 passes for 115 yards to give him a school-record 54 catches this season. Smith gained 106 yards in 20 carries.
Occidental 20, Pomona-Pitzer 14--The Tigers’ defense capped a great game with a great effort to remain atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.
Despite managing only 92 total yards, Pomona-Pitzer (2-6 overall, 1-4 in conference) was in position to win after Claudio Chavez returned a punt 78 yards to the Occidental 14 with 2:21 remaining.
But the Sagehens were turned back, as quarterback Ed Irick threw incomplete into the end zone on fourth and 6 from the Occidental 10.
Tim Carlson led Occidental (5-2-1 overall, 4-1 in conference play) with 110 yards in 33 carries.
Claremont-Mudd 24, Redlands 7--Chris Dabrow ran for 204 yards in 40 carries to lead the Stags over the Bulldogs in a SCIAC game at Claremont.
Sophomore quarterback Mike Pembroke ran for 69 yards in 10 carries, including a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter. Dabrow had a one-yard scoring run to give Claremont-Mudd (4-4 overall, 4-1 in conference) a 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Dabrow is the leading rusher in NCAA Division III with 1,225 yards. Redlands is 1-7 and 1-5.
La Verne 13, Whittier 10--Larry Hoke’s 35-yard field goal in overtime gave the Leopards the victory in a SCIAC game that featured no offensive touchdowns as the teams combined for 13 turnovers.
Hoke’s 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter sent the game into overtime. After Whittier fumbled on its overtime possession, La Verne (3-5 overall, 3-2 in conference play) ran two plays before sending in Hoke for his game-winning field goal.
Whittier (4-5 overall, 2-3 in conference) had five interceptions and three fumbles. La Verne also had five interceptions. Both of the game’s touchdowns came on interception returns.
UC Davis 28, CS Northridge 0--Todd Sloat threw for 221 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Aggies routed the Matadors in a nonconference game at Davis. UC Davis (6-2) outgained Northridge (6-3), 396-87.
Menlo 43, Azusa Pacific 7--Jerold Montano completed 18 of 30 passes for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for a touchdown to lead the Oaks over the Cougars in a nonconference game at Atherton, Calif. Menlo, ranked 14th in Division III, is 6-2. Azusa Pacific is 2-7.
