A civilian County Jail employee was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stealing $20,000 worth of cash, jewelry and other personal property from inmates being booked at the jail, sheriff’s deputies said.
Charles Pickett, 28, was held at the jail in lieu of $10,000 bail after he was booked on suspicion of grand theft, Deputy Van Mosley said. Investigators allege that Pickett, who had worked at the Men’s Central Jail for four years, stole the cash and property during the last eight months. Mosley said authorities suspected something was amiss when receipt documents were not processed for some inmates’ property. Much of the jewelry was pawned at several locations throughout Los Angeles, Mosley said.
