Four Soviet scientists touring the United States told a Reno news conference that a nuclear test ban treaty should be signed even though it would eliminate their current jobs and those of thousands of other workers at U.S. and Soviet test sites. “We could find other jobs,” said scientist Mikhail Godhberg. The scientists visited the University of Nevada at Reno to discuss seismological data accumulated from American monitoring stations in the Soviet Union and to review information from three monitoring sites around the Nevada Test Site northwest of Las Vegas. Approval of a test ban would end the scientists’ work of monitoring seismic activity during the tests.
