Decision on Probe of LaRouche Drive Delayed by Reiner

Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner has delayed an announcement on whether anyone will be prosecuted for alleged election irregularities by supporters of Proposition 64, the Lyndon LaRouche-inspired AIDS measure rejected by California voters last year.
Last week, the chief of Reiner’s special investigations division, Steven Sowders, said an announcement would be made by Dec. 3. But the announcement was delayed, and an aide for Reiner declined to reveal the reasons.
In February, Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp turned over to Reiner an investigation of charges that backers of Proposition 64 had hired illegal petition circulators and that a number of forged signatures on Proposition 64 petitions had been found.
The investigation has involved the questioning of witnesses in several states and a surprise raid by authorities on the Los Feliz-area headquarters of LaRouche’s California operations.
