Boy Receives 1st Solid Food Since Rescue

RENO — Little Stephen Edmonds received his first solid food Thursday, three days after he was brought to the surface and revived after being trapped in a car under icy water, a hospital spokesman said.
The 20-month-old child began receiving liquid nourishment on Wednesday and received solid food through a stomach tube on Thursday, according to Washoe Medical Center spokesman Tim Robinson.
The child was trapped for 20 to 25 minutes in a four-wheel-drive vehicle that skidded off a county road south of Gardnerville and crashed through the ice of a frozen canal early Tuesday. He was rescued by paramedics, who managed to restore a faint heartbeat while he was flown the 50 miles north to Reno.
His mother, Debora Edmonds, 19, escaped through a broken window but could not find her son.
The boy remained in serious condition on Thursday, but his doctor, Barry Frank, said he is confident Stephen will survive. However, the doctor said it will take time to determine whether Stephen suffered any brain damage, especially since he is still being sedated.
