College Basketball Roundup : ‘Other’ Smith Leads Georgetown Over Pitt

From Times Wire Services

Charles Smith helped Pittsburgh rise to the No. 2 ranking in the country before Charles Smith helped bring the Panthers down.

Georgetown’s less-heralded Charles Smith scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half, and the No. 14-rated Hoyas beat Pitt, 62-57, in a Big East opener at Landover, Md.

“I’m not worried about publicity,” Georgetown’s Charles Smith said. “There can be 50 Charles Smiths. As long as we win, I don’t care who gets the notoriety.”

The more notable Charles Smith, the 6-foot 10-inch center for Pitt (9-1), entered the game averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds a game. He scored 12 points against the Hoyas (10-1) but missed the final 13:44 of the first half with three fouls and wasn’t as big a factor as the smaller Charles Smith.

Smith scored 9 points in a 16-6 run that gave Georgetown a 56-52 lead. He added two free throws with 29 seconds left.

Georgetown led, 58-56, when Jaren Jackson grabbed a rebound of his own miss with 1:25 remaining and scored. Jackson grabbed another rebound with 40 seconds left, just before Pitt Coach Paul Evans was called for two technical fouls.

Evans said official Jim Burr blew a traveling call on Georgetown’s Bobby Winston.

“After four steps, I think you ought to get a traveling call,” Evans said. “Then he (Barr) has the nerve to tell me he was looking for it in the back court. For $650 (official’s pay) you ought to be able to see both.”

Smith hit 2 of 4 free throws to make it 60-56, and the Hoyas went on to their seventh straight win.

The game was marred by a fight that led to the ejection of Mark Tillmon, Georgetown’s leading scorer. With 11 minutes left in the first half, Tillmon and the Panthers’ Nate Bailey got tangled up and exchanged heated words. Tillmon threw a punch at Bailey and several more at Pitt’s Jerome Lane before both benches cleared.

Lane had 12 points and 16 rebounds for Pitt, which has not won at the Capital Centre in six tries.
