Mexico Church Leaders Cautioned on Politics

MEXICO CITY — Religious leaders can be fined for urging followers to vote for any candidate--or to abstain from voting--during next July’s national elections under a new modification to the federal electoral code, the government newspaper El Nacional has reported.
Religious authorities found to violate the decree could be fined up to 1000 times the daily minimum wage of $3.53 in the Federal District, the newspaper said this week. Officials of all religious bodies in Mexico have been legally barred from engaging in political activity since the 1930s.
