Steller’s Jays

The Times pictorial essay on the San Gabriel Mountains (Part I, Jan. 2) shows, per the caption, “a blue jay perched on a pine cone.” If this were really a blue jay, thousands of bird watchers would be flocking to the San Gabriel Mountains to see it.
Blue jays live in the eastern United States, not in California. The bird in the picture is a Steller’s jay. The jays that we see at lower elevations are scrub jays even though they, like Steller’s jays, are blue.
By the way, I didn’t see any pine cones in the picture.
