Philanthropist Armand Hammer makes his acting debut in the Jan. 21 episode of “The Cosby Show,” called “The Visit.” In a segment taped last week, Hammer played the grandfather of a cancer patient and benefactor of a hospital’s cancer research department. In real life, Hammer is serving a sixth term as chairman of the president’s Cancer Panel and personally awards $100,000 to the scientist or scientists who have done the most each year to advance cancer research. Hammer said he considers the role a launching point for a campaign to raise $1 billion for cancer research.
