MOSCOW — A flu epidemic has hit Moscow, with an estimated 13,000 to 18,000 people falling ill every day. One of them is Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze.
The Moscow party paper Moskovskaya Pravda reported today that between 120 and 200 patients are being hospitalized daily and that half of the victims are children. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Shevardnadze is suffering from flu and that a planned visit to Moscow by East German Foreign Minister Oskar Fischer has been postponed as a result.
