The Federal Trade Commission filed a formal complaint seeking to prevent Owens-Illinois Inc.’s, proposed $750-million acquisition of Brockway Inc. The merger has been stalled by a federal court order obtained by the FTC on Jan. 6, and the filing of the complaint seeks to permanently prevent the merger of the companies--two of the nation’s largest glass manufacturers. The takeover, in which Owens-Illinois sought to make Brockway one of its subsidiaries, “could substantially reduce competition in the manufacture and sale of glass containers,” for food, beverages and other products, the FTC said.
