Press for Equal Laundry Fees a Success in S.F.

SAN FRANCISCO — A laundry accused of charging more for women’s shirts than men’s has not only agreed to equalize its prices but will also launder 3,000 women’s shirts for free.
Assistant Dist. Atty. David Moon said the negotiated settlement involves only the Visitacion Valley laundry, a wholesale company, and 14 retail outlets in San Francisco that use its services.
However, he said, some other laundries seem to be equalizing prices “because they don’t want to face the wrath of women.”
Women had been charged $3 to $4 to launder their shirts while the price for men’s shirts was $1 to $2.
The laundries claimed the higher charge was needed because women’s smaller shirts did not fit on the high-speed pressing machine.
The district attorney’s office filed a sex discrimination suit against Visitacion Valley, and a San Francisco Superior Court judge ordered the laundry to charge women the same low price as men.
The 3,000-shirt free laundry offer will be applied on a first-come, first-serve basis.
