Bangladesh police shot and killed at least 10 people in the port city of Chittagong after opposition leader Sheik Hasina Wajed led several thousand demonstrators through the streets to demand the ouster of President Hussain Mohammed Ershad. The violence, in which hundreds reportedly were injured, appeared to be the worst in a two-month campaign aimed at forcing the resignation of Ershad, a former army general who has led the impoverished nation for six years. In four hours of hit-and-run battles, police fired rifles and tear gas as demonstrators threw homemade bombs and set cars ablaze, witnesses said. Senior police officials said the casualties occurred after demonstrators started hurling bombs and security forces tried to disperse them.
