Polygamist Back on Phone Line

MARION, Utah — A heavily armed polygamist holed up in a farmhouse for 12 days reconnected his telephone today and began talking--a step lawmen hope will lead to his surrender, officials said.
Addam Swapp, married to two daughters of slain polygamist John Singer, “hooked up the phone this morning,” said John T. Nielsen, state public safety commissioner, and talked to lawmen for “a very, very brief” period to set up a response to a surrender plea from Utah Gov. Norman H. Bangerter. Swapp had said Tuesday he would reopen the line to talk only to a longtime family friend who met twice in the past two days with 15 people barricaded inside the Singer farm.
