About 250 city workers, including police personnel, were evacuated twice Wednesday from City Hall and its annexes after an anonymous caller told a switchboard operator that the building would be “blown sky-high” at 3 p.m., city officials said.
No explosives were found in two police sweeps of the four structures, Assistant City Manager Paul Brady Jr. said. The threat was made at 12:54 p.m. in a call to a switchboard operator by a man who did not identify himself, Brady said.
During the sweeps, from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and from 2:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., the city conducted its business from a command post set up near City Hall, Brady said. Some nearby businesses also were evacuated as a precaution, he said.
Brady said suspicion initially fell on a man who “made some threats” at a City Council meeting Tuesday night, a man Brady did not identify. But Irvine Police Lt. Sam Allevato said said investigators had no suspects.
