It’s Believed Dodgers Have Made Gibson a Formal Offer, but Daily Talks Continue

The daily conversations between Fred Claire, executive vice president of the Dodgers, and Doug Baldwin, who represents Detroit Tigers free agent Kirk Gibson, continued Wednesday. It is believed that the Dodgers have now made a formal contract offer.

Claire wouldn’t confirm that, but he said progress was being made.

“Again, we have interest in Kirk Gibson and we’ll stay with it as long as we feel we’re making progress. As long as we continue to talk, it’s all on the positive side.”

Gibson, who is guaranteed $1.3 million in the final year of a three-year contract with the Tigers, is believed to be seeking a two-year extension that would take the three-year value to $4.8 million.

The Tigers announced Wednesday that they had offered Gibson a one-year extension, which would include a no-trade provision. Neither Baldwin nor Gibson could be reached for comment.
