THE COLLEGES : UCI Tennis Team Falls to Pepperdine

Pepperdine, ranked fourth in the nation, overpowered 11th-ranked UC Irvine, 7-2, Friday at Malibu.
Irvine had victories from No. 2 singles player Trevor Kronemann and No. 6 singles player Mike Cadigan.
Kronemann, ranked 22nd in the nation, defeated Andrew Sznadjer, ranked second in the country, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Cadigan defeated David Smith, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Pepperdine is 2-0, and Irvine is 0-1.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 7, Fresno State 2--Courtney Weichsel, the No. 1 player for UC Irvine, defeated Maria Mendez of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-1, to lead the Anteaters in nonconference action at Irvine.
Haruko Shigekawa, Irvine’s No. 2 player, defeated Val Steicousky, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, as Irvine won five of six singles matches.
