The State : Beating Victim Dies in S.D.

A 68-year-old retired professor from Monterey died of injuries suffered when he was beaten and robbed near a San Diego restaurant. John Henry Duffin died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Sharp Memorial Hospital after undergoing surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said Duffin had gone to dinner with his wife and friends Saturday night in the 4400 block of El Cajon Blvd. He left the restaurant at 9:30 p.m. to retrieve his car and was later found on a sidewalk. He had been severely beaten and his wallet was missing. Police had no suspects. Duffin had been a professor at the Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey and was in San Diego working for a company doing electrical rewiring at North Island Naval Air Station.
