Dukakis Leads as Washington Counts Last Week’s Votes

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis had a solid lead over the Rev. Jesse Jackson in partial results released Tuesday by Washington Democratic Party officials from last week’s presidential precinct caucuses.
With about 68% of the precincts reporting the results of the March 8 balloting, Dukakis had 45%, Jackson 35% and 14% were uncommitted. All the other candidates were well off the pace, with Illinois Sen. Paul Simon a weak fourth at 4%, Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore Jr. at 2% and Rep. Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri at 1%.
The Democratic Party made no effort to collect results statewide on caucus night, gathering precinct returns slowly by mail instead.
Republican Party officials said it would be at least another week before county chairmen submit the names of the GOP delegates elected.
The National Election Service reported last week that, with 71% of the Republican precincts reporting, former religious broadcaster Pat Robertson led with 39%, Kansas Sen. Bob Dole was second with 26% and Vice President George Bush got 24%.
