Long Beach : Activists Urge Nuclear Plan

A group of peace advocates has urged the Long Beach Harbor Commission to take steps to protect the city from a nuclear accident at the Long Beach Naval Station.

Harold Collins, chairman of the Long Beach Peace Coalition, said the city should prepare for an accident involving nuclear weapons aboard warships in the harbor, including the battleship Missouri. The Navy refuses to confirm nor deny whether surface warships carry nuclear weapons.

“You can make sure that in case of a nuclear accident there are emergency procedures to protect men, women and children in our communities,” said Collins, one of several speakers who appeared before the commission Monday.

Commissioner George Talin Sr. thanked the speakers for appearing, but the commission took no action on the request.
