Joseph J. Campanella was elected president, chief operating officer and a director of the Singer Co. The company also announced the resignation of William F. Schmied, 59, as co-chairman, co-chief executive, president and as a member of the board.
The 57-year-old Campanella was president of Sperry Aerospace until December, 1986, when that company was acquired by Honeywell. After the merger, he became executive vice president of avionic systems for Honeywell and remained in that job until last month.
Singer was recently taken over by an investment group headed by corporate raider Paul A. Bilzerian, who is now the company’s chairman. Bilzerian said, “The contribution that Bill Schmied made to Singer is evident in the extraordinary growth of the company’s aerospace electronics operations under his direction. Now, with Singer approaching the divestiture of those operations, it is understandable that Bill should wish to relinquish his responsibilities.”
Schmied joined Singer in 1969.
