POP LP CHART : Houston Breaks Beatles’, Bee Gees’ Records

Whitney Houston’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” is her seventh consecutive No. 1 pop single, breaking a record she shared with the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Her last No.1 single, “So Emotional,” tied the record at six top-selling records. The next time one of her singles reaches “only” No. 2 or No. 3, she will be getting condolence cards. “More Dirty Dancing” (No. 3) could bounce Michael Jackson’s “Bad” out of the No. 2 spot next week so the “Dirty Dancing” albums can be Nos. 1 and 2. Tiffany’s personal problems certainly aren’t affecting album sales. “Tiffany” just reached the 4-million-units-sold plateau. Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine quietly keep having hits. The group’s single, “Anything For You,” jumped a mighty seven notches to No. 8, with No. 1 a possibility. Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has a surprise hit with his all-instrumental album, “Surfing With the Alien” (No. 33).

* For two months, the hard-rock “Appetite for Destruction” has been creeping toward the pop Top 10. Guns N’ Roses, featuring wild-man lead singer W. Axl Rose, has finally made it, moving up three places to No. 9.
