PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — Two powerboat racers were killed Saturday when they were trapped under a canopy as their boat flipped at speeds approaching 100 m.p.h. in the Gulf of Mexico, authorities said.
Killed were the owner and pilot of the Spirit of Miss Liberty, Thomas Brandt of Gulf Stream, and the throttleman, Don Wright of Fort Lauderdale, police said. Their ages were unavailable Saturay.
The 30-foot Chris Craft, racing in the Sportsman D class of larger boats, was westbound less than 1,000 feet offshore when it flipped, witnesses said.
