Between the lines of Scheer’s story about the problem of the Jews in Palestine lies a wealth of food for thought. I think of how all of mankind lives on land forcibly taken from its previous occupants and how few are the reasons we offer for doing so--”white man’s burden,” divine contract, Lebensraum . But it all boils down to land hunger combined with enough naked force to make the grab successful. This is the common trait that makes brothers of all the world’s people.
